MATERIALS:
large clear glass or plastic container
water
vinegar
baking soda
dry spaghetti
PROCEDURE:
1. Place enough baking soda in the
container so that the bottom is covered.
2. Pour in water until about 2/3 of the
container is full.
3. SLOWLY and carefully pour in about
one cup of vinegar.
4. Add several pieces of dry spaghetti that
has been broken into one inch pieces.
What makes the spaghetti dance?
The baking soda and vinegar produce bubbles of carbon
dioxide gas in a chemical reaction. The bubbles adhere to
the pieces of spaghetti, forcing it to rise to the top. Once at
the top, the bubbles burst, and the spaghetti falls back to the
bottom of the container. This will happen over and over
again until the chemical reaction stops producing carbon
dioxide.
