It may surprise some font fans to learn that both Trebuchet MS and the easily mocked Comic Sans were designed by the same person, Vincent Connare (pronounced like "canary"). Trebuchet brings some elements of classical western typography to a sans-serif typeface?while by no means flowery, Trebuchet distinguishes itself from typefaces like Arial and Verdana with small details like the design of the ampersand (&), which references the "et" ligature from which the modern ampersand is derived. Shipped with the Windows 2000 operating system, it has since become firmly rooted in the pantheon of standard web design fonts. Like many typefaces, the name seems somewhat arbitrary, but Connare did have a story behind it: the trebuchet was a sort of medieval catapult, and the name was inspired by a puzzle that Connare heard at the Microsoft campus: "Can you make a trebuchet that could launch a person from main campus to the new consumer campus about a mile away? Mathematically, is it possible and how?" Connare, working on new typefaces for the burgeoning Internet, thought trebuchet would be the perfect name for "a font that launches words across the Internet."
